Aug, 1974 Upagraha Doordarshan Kendra (UDK) at Cuttack came into existence.
01.8.1975 Satellite Instrumental Television Experiment(SITE) started for one year

DD-ODIA : The Regional Language Satellite Service :
The Regional Language Satellite Service (RLSS) of Doordarshan for Odia Language was started on 2.10.1993 as DD-5 . The production and capsuling of programmes were done at DDK, Bhubaneswar and were sent to Pitampura, Delhi for uplinking. Subsequently, the uplinking facility was made available at DDK, Bhubaneswar and Oriya programmes of 28 Hrs. 30 Mins. duration exclusively on Satellite mode were uplinked as DD-6 from 15.08.1994. The DD-6 (Odia) Channel was made a 24-hour channel on 01.04.2001(on the occasion of Utkal Divas, the Statehood Day of Odisha State). Doordarshan fulfilled a long standing demand of people of Odisha to get a Channel in Odia language. With Round the Clock service, the rich art and culture, literature, tourism, song & dance and heritage of Odisha got a platform in reaching millions of people within the State as well as beyond the State boundary .
The Channel has a programme-mix of agriculture, health, literary works of eminent writers of the State, folk music and dance, art and craft , festivals of the State and is very close to the social and economic life of people of Odisha. Through its programmes meant for children, women, youth, farmers, senior citizens, rural people, tribals etc., DD-Odia has became a friend and guide to the people of Odisha. The Agriculture programme “Pallishree” & “Krushi Darshan”, Health programme “Kalyani” , “Arogya Bharatam” & “Hello Doctor”, Legal Hints programme “Ama Aain” has become quite beneficial and useful to the viewers of the state.

During the celebration of Golden Jubilee Anniversary Year of the Nation’s Independence (1997-1998), the Channel produced and telecast a number of programmes in different formats like Feature, Documentary, Dramatisation, Musical Rendering, Quiz etc..These programmes had two major objectives – one to recollect the long struggle for achieving the Freedom and the second to critically analyse the progress made by the country and the State in various fields in the last fifty years.
In the year 2002-03, to give a boost to the Odia Literature with mass touch, Doordarshan Kendra, Bhubaneswar invited Producers/Directors with National/International Awards as well as Degree/Diploma holders from reputed film institutes to produce tele films(101 episodes) on the literary works of noted writers

To give boost to the tourism of the State, the Kendra produced a series of episodes entitling “The Temples of Odisha”. Noted Producer Sadhu Meher also directed some episodes on Tourist Spots of Odisha. The classical dance “Odissi” alongwith varied rich folk form of music and dance of the State has got a platform in the form of Doordarshan to reach people round the globe. Telecast of Konark Dance Festival, Odissi Music Festival, Mukteswar Dance Festival, Rajarani Music Festival, Folk Dance & Music Festival of Odisha, Chhau Dance Festival, Festival of Contemporary Dance, Rangabati Festival by the Kendra has attracted people to Odisha not only from within the country but also from abroad.

The live telecasts of Snana Yatra, Sri Gundicha Yatra, Bahuda Yatra & Suna Besha of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra & Devi Subhadra from Puri have received more eyeballs from viewers across the globe. The introduction of another two important events i.e. Adharapana & Niladri Vije in the year 2016 has got more eye-balls and viewers have welcomed the efforts DDK, Bhubaneswar.( First L/T of Car Festival(Regional)-1992, Regional & National-1993, Regional, National & International-1994, Return Car Festival(Bahuda Yatra)-2004, Suna Besha- 2005, Snana Yatra-2008)

The Kendra’s initiatives to telecast the Sacred Marriage Ceremony of Lord Shiva & Devi Parbati celebrated with great pomp and ceremony in Western Odisha and known as “Sital Sasthi” LIVE since (2014 and Maha Shiva Ratri of Famous Lingaraj Temple, Bhubaneswar from 2016 has largely been appreciated by viewers.

The Kendra has also made significant contribution in popularizing the rich literary works of our eminent poets/writers. To commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Swabhab Kavi Gangadhar Meher and 100th Year of creation of epic “Tapaswini”, the Kendra telecast a 16- episode series on “Tapaswini” in March’2013 and a 23-episode series on another epic “Pranaya Ballari” in August-September’2013.

Doordarshan Kendra, Bhubaneswar is in news for producing a number of innovative programmes which has brought name and fame to the Kendra. The Kendra has been awarded with a number of national and international awards .To name a few, the Kendra received the prestigious Asia Vision Award for best and fast coverage of Baripada Fire Tragedy in the year 1997 and coverage of Super Cyclone in Odisha in 1999 . Apart from this, the Kendra received Commonwealth Broadcasting Award-2000 for programmes on elimination of Leprosy, Gate Malaria Award-2006 to “Kalyani” on malaria, UNFPA-Ladli Media Award for Gender Sensitivity-2007 to Kalyani besides DD-Annual Awards to its various programmes. The Kendra has also got“Best Doordarshan Kendra-2008” and “Best Maintained Kendra-2010” in the DD Annual Awards. The coverage of world famous RATH YATRA in the year 2009 has got DD Annual Awards for best OB Coveage.

Thus, DD-Odia Channel by catering to the needs of different target audience and telecasting programmes on the News & Views, Dance & Music, Health & Agriculture, Literature, Freedom Struggles, tourism etc. has earned a distinct place in media world . Over the years, the Channel has not only served and entertained the millions of Odia viewers but also has become the nucleus of its socio-cultural life.

From 1st March’2014, DD-Odia channel is getting terrestrial support of 48 hrs 30 minutes transmission per week and the rest 119 hours 30 minutes duration of transmission is exclusively on Satellite mode.

State Scenario:
The first entry of Doordarshan into the state of Odisha was in the form of opening of a Base Production Centre (BPC) at Cuttack during September, 1973. The Upagraha Doordarshan Kendra (UDK) at Cuttack came into existence in August, 1974 to feed programmes for Satellite Instrumental Television Experiment (SITE). The SITE project started on 01.8.1975 and ended on 31.7.1976. During this period, the Cuttack Kendra originated Odia language programmes and also contributed programmes for Hindi speaking rural viewers of Madhya Pradesh. Nearly 600 community TV sets (DRS) were installed in Sambalpur, Dhenkanal and Phulbani districts of Orissa.
The SITE continuity terrestrial X-mission began for the viewers of Sambalpur from 30.4.1978. The duration of transmission was for 1 hour 15 minutes. A High Power Transmitter was commissioned at DDK, Cuttack on 10.3.1985 and relayed the programmes telecast through the INSAT-B for the viewers around 80-100 KMs radius of its transmission zone.
The local transmission of Cuttack Kendra was inaugurated on 12.11.1987 and regional Oriya programmes started from the Kendra from 16.11.1987. Regional news bulletin was introduced from 1.7.1988.
The regional programme up-linking facilities were made available to Odisha network from 7.9.1991 which enabled regional programme transmission by all HPTs/LPTs in the State. The new Doordarshan complex at Bhubaneswar was commissioned on 19.11.1992 and since then the Kendra is doing its best to fulfill its set objectives of providing information, education and entertainment to the viewers of Odisha
The Regional Language Satellite Service (RLSS) which was started on 2.11.1993 was made a 24-hour channel on 01.04.2001 on the auspicious day of Utkal Divas and by that a long standing demand of people of Odisha was fulfilled. With this, the rich art, culture and heritage of Odisha got a major boost in publicity in national/ international arena. In July, 2002 Doordarshan Kendra, Bhubaneswar started another news bulletin in Oriya in morning transmission and added two news bulletins at 3 P.M. and 5 P.M.

As on today, Doordarshan has 84 transmitters for DD-1 and 11 transmitters for DD-News in Odisha. DD-1 covers 88.7% of the land area and 93.3% population of the state. On the other hand DD-News has a coverage of 12.4 percent of land area and 25.3 percent of population of the state.
Achievement of Doordarshan Kendra , Bhubaneswar :

Odisha has had a rich art , culture & tradition , literature, music and dance . It is a land of treasures. It abounds in natural resources. A long coastline with magnificent beaches, a vast stretch of forest-cover rich with flora and fauna, the ancient architectural monuments, an impressive cultural heritage all these heavenly gifts attract the visitors to Odisha from round the globe. The literature, the folk art-form, the Cinema, the music and the dance has a majestic charm on others. Doordarshan from the beginning of its arrival in the State of Odisha started showcasing all these beauties with a view to not only preserve in different forms like documentaries, tele-films, short stories but also to popularize beyond state boundary.

The literary works that serialized includes Tadapa, Sesha Basantara Chithi, Pataka, Randi Pua Ananta, Paduka Puja, Sakhi , Sua Munhara Patara etc.

In the subsequent years i.e. 2004-05, another 51 episodes of programmes on Odia Literature were commissioned by the Kendra which includes Ananya Anupama (Bijaya Mishra), Samaya Suare Jeevan Dhara( Binapani Mohanty), Madhabira Madhurati(Gayatri Basumallick) etc. In the year 2005-06, under Indian Classics , 27 episodes of programmes were produced and includes Pratibha (Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab), Bajra Bahu (Kanhu Charan Mohanty). Noted Producer Sadhu Meher was assigned to produced Tele Films on Kali Bohu( Kuntala Kumari Sabat), Gopa Pura (Dr. Rama Chandra Behera), Pasanara Prana (Bama Charan Mitra), Nila Mastrani (Godavarish Mohapatra), Panu Mishra(Pandit Godavarish Mishra) & Naba Diganta (Nandini Satpathy). Noted Producer Shri A.K.Bir produced 10 episodes on stories from Loka Galpa Sanchayana).
